If you haven’t seen it, this year our Advent appeal is shining a spotlight on what’s really important at Christmas – and beyond too.

Here, Kath from our formation and animation team tells us more about what she’s most looking forward to over the festive season and how small changes can make a big difference to the lives of people in our area…

What does Caritas mean to you and what do you do here?

Caritas means ‘love in action’ and our services certainly demonstrate this every day.

My role as formation coordinator is different. It takes me mainly into our wonderful high schools and primary schools where I deliver our Caritas ambassador programme which develops young leaders in social justice rooted in Catholic Social Teaching. I also work closely with our parish engagement officer, accessibility coordinator and our policy and influencing officer.

What is the true meaning of Christmas to you and how will you put it into action this year?

For me Christmas is a very special time. It is about marking the birth of Jesus and the timeless message of love, hope and joy this brings us.

I am blessed that I work for Caritas whose services are a source of love, hope and joy to many local people in crisis.

How will you #BeeThere for others this Christmas?

During Mass at Christmas time and throughout the year, we will pray for everyone who does not have a safe place to call home or is experiencing poverty and loneliness.

We still write Christmas cards and letters to family and friends who do not live nearby because it is a time to connect with them in a personal way and remind them they are loved and remembered.

I’ll be preparing and cooking Christmas lunch for my family and anyone who wishes to join us, but they will all have to do the washing up and tidying up afterwards!

What would you like to shine a spotlight on this Christmas?

There are so many sad things happening in the world at the moment but if I have to pick just one thing it is that we all have the power to make people feel either welcome or unwelcome in our community.

We are all made in the image and likeness of God. We all have equal human dignity. Let’s then choose to be agents of peace and friendship rather than of fear and division.

Taking time to pause, slow things down, reflect and do the things that really matter.

Making sure we are not too busy.

To make that phone call.

To have that chat.

To call and see the friend or neighbour we’ve been meaning to check in on.

To spend time and have a coffee with that person who really needs and deserves our full attention and to be listened to.

The BeeGees, Abbbba (with four bees!), Lewis Capalbee and Benson Bee are all stars of our latest animation that you can watch below.  Can you think of any other bee related stars?

Well, as I am a HUGE fan, it’s got to be The Bee-tles!
