Bishop’s Fund

Crises can happen to anyone and we believe that everyone deserves a helping hand during these difficult periods.

The Caritas Bishop’s Fund plays a crucial role in providing support to families and individuals who are experiencing challenges or crises within our diocese. These difficulties may arise from various circumstances such as illness, unemployment, the ending of the Universal Credit £20 uplift, job insecurity, and the increasing costs of energy and food.

Recognising the pressing need for assistance in these situations, the fund has been established to offer immediate support to those in need.

In addition to the ongoing support that the Caritas Bishop’s Fund receives from the Diocese of Salford, we’ve also received additional support from Mary Strand Trust and the Charitable Trust of Mary Patricia O’Halloran (which is specifically designated for residents living in any of the wards of Manchester City Council). These generous contributions enhance our ability to reach a wider range of individuals and families, ensuring that help is available to those residing in the local community.

The primary purpose of these funds is to provide immediate relief during times of crisis. While we understand the ongoing challenges faced by many, the resources of the Caritas Bishop’s Fund are limited and can only be allocated as one-time support in exceptional circumstances. We evaluate each application fairly and impartially, taking into account the individual circumstances and needs of those seeking assistance.  Unfortunately, we are unable to fund debt repayments or rent arrears.

If someone you know in your parish or school community is facing a crisis or you find yourself in exceptional circumstances, we encourage you to submit an application to the Caritas Bishop’s Fund. Our dedicated team is here to review each case with care and compassion, ensuring that assistance is provided where it is needed most. Together, let us support one another and build a brighter future for all members of our diocese.

“I’ve been really struggling, although school has been brilliant with food vouchers and school shoes.  Then the oven broke and there’s no way I have money left over to save up for a new one.  The house is damp, so I need to keep the bedroom windows open, otherwise my youngest two with asthma suffer with their chests.  The heating bills have been sky high as a result.  The landlord knows all about it, but hasn’t done anything so far…”
