Frequently Asked Questions

What has happened to my adoption records?

The Caritas Salford Adoption Support Service closed in September 2022.
Your adoption record has been transferred to Salford City Council as the Designated Local Authority for safe keeping. This is in line with the requirements of legislation. They will keep this record for 100 years from the date of your adoption order. You can request to see the records at any time.

How will I access my adoption records?

Information from Caritas Diocese of Salford’s adoption records can be provided to all those whose adoption was arranged by Caritas or Catholic Children’s Rescue Society. Salford City Council as the local authority will provide you with a portfolio of information from the records.

If you need support this is managed by Adoption Counts who are the Regional Adoption Agency.  They bring together professional expertise and specialist skills on behalf of five local authorities across Greater Manchester and Cheshire to deliver high quality adoption services.  They work with families on behalf of agencies like Caritas Salford whose registered address is in the Salford City Council Local Authority areas.

If you are enquiring about receiving support, please either fill in the relevant form if it is a new enquiry, or write to:

I would like to know if any member of my birth family has ever asked about me. How will I find this out?

The best way for you to do this would be to contact Adoption Counts directly to request this information or to engage the services of an intermediary agency to make this enquiry on your behalf.

I would like to search for my birth family. How can I do this?

You can begin the search for your birth information and access to your adoption records from the time you turn 18 years of age.

If you don’t already have it, it would be useful for you to apply to the General Register Office (GRO) to request your birth information. The GRO will send all relevant information to your local adoption agency, who you will then be advised to contact.

Your next point of contact here will be to contact Adoption Counts: https://adoptioncounts.org.uk/get-in-touch

We would advise you to use an intermediary service to search for your birth family on your behalf.

Intermediary services (adoption tracing services): Birth relatives, as well as adopted adults and their descendants, can apply for intermediary services under the law in England and Wales. The person applying for the service does not need to reside in this country, but the adoption concerned needs to have been legalised within England and Wales.

Intermediary services are not provided by Salford City Council. Adoption Counts, for persons living in the areas they serve, will provide a post adoption support service, they will access the records from Salford City Council you can get in touch with them here.

There are a number of other agencies who provide intermediary services including Father Hudson’s our partner Caritas agency, which is based in Birmingham and will be happy to help people whose adoption was arranged by Caritas/CCRS:

Alternatively, you may wish to contact:

Joanna North Associates
PAC-UK

Please note that intermediary services will usually incur a fee so we would recommend that you research what each agency can provide and the costs involved before engaging their services.
