Ensuring everyone who would like to volunteer with us can do so is really important, including people living with disabilities.  So, we’re glad to have been able to continue a mutually beneficial partnership with Bridge College for the second year running.

Here, Raddon from our Lalley team tells us more…

This year at the Lalley centre we’ve continued our successful partnership with a  supported learning college in Manchester – Bridge College – by welcoming two new students for their weekly work experience placement.

Both students have learning and communication needs and autism/autism spectrum disorder, whilst one student primarily uses British Sign Language (BSL) and adapted sign language to communicate.

To ensure we all get the most out of the experience, tasks we ask students to help with are often adapted to their needs by our staff.

We also help students develop their confidence with language, teaching key words related to the tasks they’re doing.

Since rejoining the programme in September, students’ confidence with helping out has improved noticeably now they’ve learnt where different food items go on the pantry shelves, and how to do various gardening tasks like watering and using a wheelbarrow.

Both students would like to keep helping this year and one has said he wants to do more gardening at college too.

But don’t just take our word for it!

Chloe Parker, job coach at Bridge College, recently told us:  “Caritas Salford’s Lalley centre  has been an incredible partner in supporting our students through meaningful and rewarding work experience opportunities.

“Their team has helped our students develop valuable life and employability skills while building their confidence in a supportive and inclusive environment.

“They’ve shown great adaptability and understanding, taking the time to listen to our students’ individual needs and making the placements accessible and successful for everyone involved.

“We’ve noticed a real, positive impact back at college, with students becoming more engaged, confident, and proactive in work-based activities.

“We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Raddon, Minna, and Matthew at Caritas for their ongoing support, enthusiasm, and dedication. Their commitment has truly made a difference to our students’ development and overall experience.”

Watch the video below to hear from Nicola, a support worker at the college, as she explains more about  what the students’ placement here has meant to her and the students too.
