Here, our director Patrick, tell us more about why it’s important to be present with others at this time of year, and to bring light and hope into the ordinary moments of life…
What does Caritas and our services mean to you and what do you do here?
Caritas is the practical expression of our faith in action – walking alongside people, offering hope and dignity where it’s most needed.
As director, I have the great privilege of supporting our staff and volunteers who bring this mission to life every day.
My role is to help ensure that together we remain faithful to our mission of offering hope, a safe place to visit or stay, and a long term future for those people experiencing poverty, homelessness, displacement or disadvantage. Also to help amplify the voices of those who experience these challenges to advocate for lasting changes.
What is the true meaning of Christmas to you and how will you put it into action this year?
For me, the true meaning of Christmas is found in the Incarnation – God choosing to dwell among us, sharing fully in our humanity.
At Christmas we’re reminded of how God comes close, not in power or comfort, but in vulnerability, simplicity and love. And it is a call for us to do the same, to be present with others, especially those on the margins, and to bring light and hope into the ordinary moments of life.
Christmas is also a precious time to be with family both my own and the wider Caritas community.
How will you #BeeThere for others this Christmas?
By taking time to listen, to be present and to encourage those who carry the challenges of poverty and disadvantage, and to be with our team of staff and volunteers and the people who use our services.
What would you like to shine a spotlight on this Christmas?
I’d like to shine a spotlight on the quiet acts of kindness and compassion that are not only shown in our services every day but also by countless other organisations and institutions.
Too often we’re submerged with communications about the brokenness of things but in fact we need to look at the amazing communities we live in and the work shown every day by staff and volunteers who go the extra mile, who bring joy into difficult situations and the people we support who show such strength and generosity of spirit.
What’s really important at this time of year?
Not just this time of year but all year round, I think we need to remember that the human person is not just sacred but social, has dignity and that we belong together in a community.
This means to be connected better, show kindness and be part of one human family. This is what makes Christmas real!
Bee-yoncé, Lewis Capal-bee… can you think of any other bee-related stars that might join our Stars in their Hives show?
How about Sting — he’s already halfway there!
Thank you.
