Here, our newest member of the team, Helena, tells us more about how she got involved…

 

What’s your background and relevant experience?

My journey as a support worker started 21 years ago.  The job role was extremely challenging yet rewarding, knowing that I have made a positive difference in the lives of people that I have supported over the years.

During my time working as a support worker, I achieved my Health and Social Care levels 2 and 3.  These courses aided me in my work role.  Although I enjoyed working and supporting people, I needed to do more to progress on my career path.

 

How did you come to work at Caritas?

I decided to get back into education, however, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do.  I knew I wanted to help people, particularly those who have been marginalised in society and to advocate for those who have been disadvantaged by harsh policies.  I did a lot of research and came across a social policy degree course.  I read the content of what the course entailed, and I was delighted to pursue a four-year social policy degree – a course which was related to what I wanted to pursue in the future.

While pursuing this course, I had to study full time and work part time mainly on weekends.  Balancing studying and working was no easy task, but I was determined and committed.  I completed my degree in 2025 and I came across a job vacancy as an energy advisor with an organisation named Caritas Diocese of Salford.  It was my first time hearing of Caritas and although I did not have direct experience as an energy advisor, I’d gained transferable skills in my previous job.

I am currently working as an energy advisor with Caritas and I must say it has been one of the best decisions I have made to date.

Caritas as a charitable organisation is transforming lives, especially supporting people who are experiencing poverty and are marginalised in society.

The most rewarding part of my role is knowing that I am able to assist individuals and families during an extremely stressful time.  Worrying about energy bills can have a real impact on their wellbeing.  Being able to offer reassurance and give practical support makes the work fulfilling.

 

What’s a typical day like for you?

A typical day as an energy advisor, is that I usually start checking tasks that I must complete for the day, checking and responding to emails, checking and acknowledging posts on teams with information to help in my role.  I run energy sessions for individuals who access the service.  For example, winter warmth workshops, simple things to help them improve insulation and to manage their heating efficiently at home.

I also apply for energy vouchers for people who are in need of electricity and gas.  I do ring individuals to check if they have received their vouchers and to find out from them how the voucher has helped them.

Our team can help in lots of ways, including:

  • Offering practical advice on how to reduce energy usage at home.
  • Checking energy bills and tariffs to make sure people that access our service are not overpaying.
  • Advising individuals on managing energy debt and making an agreement with their energy supplier to make affordable repayment plans.
  • Providing energy vouchers where eligible.

 

What would you say to people locally who are in need of support or advice around their energy?

The energy team at Caritas are helpful, and people should not feel embarrassed, or struggle in silence as energy costs are a struggle currently for many households.  People should take the first step and ask for help.
