We were pleased to welcome Lucy Anns, senior policy officer for Caritas Europa, based in Brussels, on a special visit to the Diocese of Salford’s Laudato Si’ Centre at Wardley Hall.
With family roots in the area, Ms Anns returned to Salford to learn more about the diocese’s efforts in tackling the global climate crisis and addressing local social challenges.
During her visit, Ms Anns met with Bishop John Arnold, Bishop of Salford and chair of our charity, as well as the Lead Bishop for the Environment for the Catholic Church in England and Wales, to discuss the global and local responses to the environmental crisis.

She also toured the Laudato Si’ Centre with Dr Emma Gardner, head of environment for the diocese, seeing first-hand the practical steps being taken to care for our common home.
In addition, Ms Anns met with Patrick O’Dowd, our director, to discuss wider issues of social policy, poverty, homelessness, displacement and disadvantage across the region.
Reflecting on the visit, Patrick said, “It was a pleasure to welcome Lucy back to Salford and to share our commitment to environmental stewardship and social justice.
“Collaboration is one of the greatest strengths across the global Caritas family and essential in how we respond at a local and international level to these pressing issues.”
The visit highlighted the strong connections between local action and global advocacy, and the diocese’s ongoing commitment to building a more just and sustainable world.
