In advance of Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, which will be taking place on Wednesday 26 November 2025, our energy advice team has more information on how you – or someone you know – can get advice and support if you need it…
Over the past three years, the cost-of-living crisis has stretched household budgets while the energy crisis has increased household fuel bills.
This means that many people are struggling to keep up with their fuel payments.
This disproportionately impacts people on a low income or who are unemployed, single parents, people with disabilities or long-term illnesses, and people who live in privately rented accommodation, council or social housing.
This year, National Energy Action and our energy advice team are spotlighting the impact of fuel poverty on children.
As our recent report shows, children living in poverty are affected by in many ways.
Living in cold, damp, mouldy homes negatively impacts the health, comfort, and life chances of children. Our energy advice team is supporting parents and families who are struggling to keep up with their fuel payments and keep their house warm by reducing their energy bills, increasing their home’s energy efficiency, and helping them to manage their energy debt.
For example, the team recently helped Zara (name has been changed) to manage her energy debt.
Zara is a low-income single mother of children with disabilities. She struggled to keep up with her fuel payments whilst keeping her house safe, warm, and accessible for her family and built up hundreds of pounds of energy debt. Zara came to an energy advice service drop-in and our advisors helped Zara to successfully apply for a debt relief grant from her energy supplier saving her hundreds of pounds.
Zara said: “I was struggling and stressing so much and then I came and saw an energy advisor. I’m so happy. He helped me to apply for a debt relief grant with my supplier and I saved so much money. I really appreciate it.”
This helped Zara to keep her house warm, safe, and accessible for her family without worrying about her debt.
