“It’s about being present with people…when life feels heavy or uncertain.”

This year our Advent appeal, which aims to raise much-needed funds so we can #BeeThere for people at Christmas and beyond, is asking for your help to shine a spotlight on what’s really important.
Here, Erna, who is a volunteer supporting our energy advice service team, tells us more about how she will #BeeThere this Christmas…
What does Caritas and our service mean to you and what do you do here?
Caritas means compassion in action to me. It’s about being present with people, especially when life feels heavy or uncertain.
As an energy advice champion volunteer, I listen and help people find the right support when they are struggling.
Sometimes people simply need to be heard, and having someone to walk alongside them can make all the difference. Even small acts of care can reflect God’s grace and remind people they are not alone.
What is the true meaning of Christmas to you and how will you put it into action this year?
For me, the true meaning of Christmas is hope, love, and God being close to us in our everyday struggles. Jesus is the reason I celebrate Christmas, as it reminds me of His birth. It is about light entering dark places. I will put this into action by being patient, kind, and attentive, especially to those who may feel anxious about their lives.
How will you #BeeThere for others this Christmas?
I will #BeeThere by listening carefully, offering practical advice, and helping people find support when they feel overwhelmed.
Sometimes being there simply means taking time to explain things clearly or reassuring someone that help is available. Small acts of care can make a big difference, especially at Christmas.
What would you like to shine a spotlight on this Christmas?
As an energy advice champion volunteer, I’d like to shine a spotlight on fuel poverty and the quiet struggles many people face behind closed doors.
Christmas is a good time to raise awareness and remind people that practical support and community care really matter.
What’s really important at this time of year?
What’s really important is remembering why we celebrate Christmas. Christ’s love, peace, and hope for the world. It’s a time to slow down, reconnect with God and one another, and choose compassion over being busy.
Christmas reminds me that presence matters more than presents, and that being kind and attentive can bring warmth even when times are difficult.
