We’re proud to have launched a brand new service aimed at helping provide much-needed support for local people experiencing homelessness.

As with all of the services we provide, we’ve only been able to do that thanks to the kind support of a range of funders and donations from the wider public too.

Here, EDGE Consulting Engineers tell us more about why they chose to sponsor a room for local people experiencing homelessness…

EDGE, a civil and structural engineering firm, has long been committed to using its influence beyond construction and infrastructure to support communities. As part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, the company sponsored a room at our new Caritas House accommodation to help ensure the project could become a reality.

Homelessness is a growing crisis in Manchester. With one in 61 people in Manchester currently experiencing homelessness, the need for sustainable, long-term solutions has never been greater. Caritas House is part of a wider movement to provide shelter and pathways out of homelessness through wraparound support, skills training, and well-being programmes.

Patrick O’Dowd, our director, highlighted the importance of businesses stepping up to support initiatives like this: “As the need for high-quality places for people experiencing homelessness to live grows, it’s vital that teams of experts like ours are on hand to ensure full wrap-around support. This wouldn’t be possible without businesses like EDGE supporting financially and through hands-on volunteering.”

Beyond its initial financial sponsorship, EDGE is committing long-term to our charity and the wider community.

The company has introduced impact volunteering days, allowing employees to take a paid day off to contribute to local charities. The partnership with Caritas Salford will see EDGE staff actively involved in supporting homelessness services across Greater Manchester.

Joey Jones, director at EDGE, explained why this was important for the company: “At EDGE, we don’t just build structures, we want to help support people. Caritas House is a crucial step in providing dignity, stability, and opportunity as the team works alongside those facing homelessness. Engineering is about shaping communities, and that means playing an active role in making them better for everyone.”

Manchester is undergoing rapid urban regeneration, with major infrastructure and housing projects transforming the city. However, as demand for high-end residential and commercial developments grows, so does the pressure on affordable and supported housing for vulnerable individuals.

EDGE hopes that its work with Caritas Salford will not only provide direct support but also encourage more businesses in the construction and engineering sectors to take action. By integrating CSR into long-term business strategies, companies can drive real change while continuing to shape the cities they build in.
