“It makes my world a better place…”
Do you know someone who would enjoy this article?
It’s important that our services are run in partnership with people who access them.
Whether that’s via the coproduction sessions we hold so people can help shape activities and priorities, or other opportunities such as our community volunteer scheme.
Community volunteers are really important members of our team.
They’re people who access our services but who have decided to also give something back, giving their time to help run activities, carry out general duties, or support others in their local community who need help.
The volunteers regularly feed back that they really enjoy their role and as well as enabling them to help others, that it also helps them to increase their confidence, improve their existing skills or learn new ones, and even opens up new employment or other opportunities too.
Here, Philip, one of our community volunteers tells us a little more about why he gives his time in this way:
Tell us about what you do at Caritas…
I help with general duties. I help keep the building and gardens clean and tidy, as well as the areas around the building too.
I have used the service for some time and have been volunteering for about six weeks now.
What is the best thing about volunteering?
It lets me give something back to the people who help me. I love meeting people too.
How are you supported to carry out your role?
I have had support and training. I already had training and qualifications too.

We’re a charity. What’s it like volunteering with a charitable organisation?
It’s very rewarding knowing that I’m helping others.
What surprised you about volunteering that you didn’t expect?
I think what surprised me most is how friendly people are.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not volunteering?
I love cleaning, and I love walking too.
What three words best describe you?
Friendly. Helpful. Kind.
How would you sum up the difference your volunteering makes in a sentence?
It makes my world a better place.
What would you say to other people thinking of starting to volunteer?
Do it. You will benefit greatly.
