We have our very own community allotment in North Manchester!
The Caritas Lalley allotment is a really peaceful outdoor garden where we grow flowers, food and social connections.
It’s a welcoming space for learning, socialising and healing, boosting wellbeing and acting as a really positive hub in our community.
Food grown in the allotment is distributed to local people via our food pantry, bringing city grown nutrients to local residents too.
We’re really proud that we are helping to tackle environmental crises and social justice together, through sustainable gardening which provides healthy food to those who need it most.
Did you know…?
Everyone is welcome! We love to meet new people and say hello to familiar faces too.
You don’t have to garden, get muddy or weed if you come to the allotment, though you can if you want to!
You can always just pop by to enjoy the quiet space, read a book, knit, have a cup of tea – anything you like!
We grow using sustainable organic and no-dig methods, create our own compost using food waste, and actively encourage biodiversity on site.
People using the allotment also help us shape the services and sessions we offer – for example feedback has led to more craft and cooking sessions in the outdoor space this year.
Last year…
We welcomed more people than ever to the allotment, with 530 adults and 410 children.
Our pioneering compost club has inspired two further schemes in a school and event space locally.
The Caritas Compost Club produced 9.5 tonnes of compost last year, saving around £900 in purchase costs and involving pupils from a local school and volunteers too.
We grew 625kg of food, worth £4777.94.
890 allotment produce parcels were given out in our community food pantry.
Visitors enjoyed eight local nature walks to help build social connections – and learn lots about the great outdoors too!
Our allotment open day last summer was attended by 133 people. We’re holding another one soon and would love you to join us! All are welcome, and it’s set to be a really fun, family-friendly occasion.
