Jayne from our School Service team is taking on a special running challenge this May as part of our Every Step challenge.

If you’ve not heard about it, Every Step is asking people across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and beyond to take on a challenge – be it physical or mental – this year to help raise much-needed funds.

Here, Jayne tells us more about her own Every Step challenge and what she’s most looking forward to…

Why did you decide to take on a challenge for the Every Step campaign for Caritas?

It’s such a worthy cause and I love a challenge so it made sense. I’ve also been wanting to get fitter and I thought having this run would give me the motivation to do it with something to aim for.

Have you run before?

Once ….I did the Sefton 10k Race for Life in July 2023 in memory of one of our Caritas colleagues who sadly died from cancer in March last year. I am definitely not a runner and don’t particularly enjoy it but it’s something I can do and so I’m motivated to do it to raise some much- needed funds for Caritas.

How are you feeling about running in such an iconic race as the Great Manchester Run?

I’m looking forward to it. I’ve heard the atmosphere is brilliant and I’m sure it will spur me on, especially towards the end when I’ve nothing left!

What are you most looking forward to?

The finish line…

Why do you think it’s important to raise a much money as possible?

In my role in the School Service team I see the daily impact of the cost-of-living crisis and how hard it hits families.

The number of children and families experiencing poverty and crisis situations is increasing all the time. There is so much pressure on families and the daily impact of this is very real.

Statutory services are stretched and thresholds are getting higher and higher, so the demand for voluntary sector services is ever increasing to bridge this gap and offer the support that these families need. This is not possible without funding and so we need to raise as much as possible to enable the charity to continue to deliver these much-needed services to local people.

What would you say to other people considering taking on their own Every Step challenge in 2024 to raise funds for Caritas Salford?

Do it! You won’t regret it!
