Fundraising in a cost-of-living crisis: why our Advent appeal is so important

Date Published: 28 Nov 2023

With increasing demand for our services due to the cost-of-living crisis, it’s arguably more important than ever that we’re there for people in our local communities.

But, as a charity, we’re also impacted significantly by the rise in costs, whether to heat our day centres, buy food to serve for those who need it, or in countless other ways.  That’s why the amazing support we receive from people who share our campaigns, make donations or support our activities in countless other ways is so vital.  We really, really appreciate it.

Here, Rachel Taylor who leads our income development team, tells us more about this year’s Advent appeal, why it’s so important – and what her dream is this Christmas…

What is this year’s Advent appeal all about?

There’s a lot going on in the world right now, so we want to remind people that even the smallest kind action can make a huge difference.  We are asking people to pledge to BeeThere for just one person this Christmas, in whatever small way they can, and really make a massive difference to lives of people locally.

Why is it so important that people support the appeal this year?

Everyone deserves a chance at fulfilling their dreams, especially if they are dreams about fundamental things everyone should have – dreams about having a safe, secure place to call home, knowledge that there will be food on the table every day, or a chance to escape discrimination, danger or isolation.

We’re acutely aware of the increased pressures on local people due to financial issues and housing problems. Thankfully, Caritas Salford is able to help everyone that comes to us because of the generosity of our supporters.  We cannot do it without you.

What are the different ways that people can take part in BeeThere this year?

There are local people facing crisis right now.  People in urgent need of support.  So making a financial donation to this campaign can bring immediate practical relief and access to those basic rights that everyone should have.  Whatever people are experiencing right now, we believe everyone deserves to dream.

You could also share with us what your big dream is for this Christmas and make a pledge of the small change you will make to BeeThere for another person.  After all, big dreams come from small change.

Is fundraising difficult at the moment due to the economic climate?

Yes, and the economic climate affects all the different income streams that Caritas Salford might rely on.  For example, councils have seen their own budgets slashed, so have less money to support vital charitable services like our day centres and outreach. There is more competition for grant and trust funds. And the same challenges facing people who are accessing our services are also facing the traditional loyal supporters of Caritas Salford, some of whom have had to reduce or stop their regular gifts.

What’s Christmas like at Caritas?

Really busy!  Schools, parishes, community groups and businesses come laden with items from our Christmas Wish List to help us to put on a really special Christmas fortnight at each of our services.  With these and the financial gifts we receive, everyone gets to eat lovely food and receive a Christmas present.  Our staff and volunteers host celebrations, including on Christmas Day, to ensure nobody misses out on good company and a few party games.

Why is it particularly important for people to support our work at this time of year?

Christmas and winter can put a lot of pressure on people, whether it’s financial pressures due to increased heating bills, ensuring children have Christmas presents under the tree, or because of tenancy or housing worries.  The pressure to have fun and spend time with loved ones can be particularly difficult for those who are alone or isolated for any reason.  Helping Caritas Salford at this time of year will ensure that nobody is turned away and that anyone who needs it can be supported to dream big again.

What’s the one thing you wish people knew about Caritas and our work?

We welcome everyone!  People who access our services help us to design and deliver the services that best fit with their experiences.

What small change could people pledge locally, apart from donating to our Advent appeal, that would make a big difference?

I think I’d love it if people pledged to share our animation film with their friends and family and told others about the work of Caritas Salford.

This year’s Advent appeal is all about dreams – what would your dream be when it comes to helping you carry on your work at Caritas to support people in Greater Manchester and Lancashire?

My dream is that Caritas Salford is even better known so that we build relationships and income to carry on our great work.

And what about your own dreams?

I am dreaming that children and families living locally aren’t worried about losing their home, that they’re not worried about not having enough to eat, and that they can have a safe and happy Christmas.

How will you #BeeThere for someone this Christmas?

I’m particularly mindful of those that are spending their Christmas alone this year, so we’ve invited friends, neighbours and family members to be at our house for food and company all over Christmas, and will be doing lots of visiting too.
