Volunteers at St. Monica’s RC Parish, Flixton welcomed David Stanton, the Irish Minister of State for Immigration who visited on Monday to find out first hand how communities can welcome refugees.
St Monica’s has become an important spot on the good practice map of supporting vulnerable refugee families as part of the new Home Office Community Sponsorship initiative that enabled local communities to lead on the resettlement and integration of refugees by working in partnership with the Home Office Immigration services and local authorities.
Minister David Stanton said he was very impressed and enthused by the leadership the parish has shown, describing the encounter as “a revelation”. Departing the meeting to visit the home of the sponsored Syrian family he promised to invite Caritas to Ireland to share our experience with the voluntary sector and local authorities there.
