Romero day celebration

Last Saturday (25 March) a group of some 30-40 gathered at Sacred Heart church, Colne to commemorate the life and witness of Blessed Oscar Romero, the Archbishop of San Salvador who was assassinated as he was celebrating Mass on 24 March 1980 – a saint for our time.

Fr Jim O’Keefe gave a very moving and stimulating account of the man, the saint and his message for us in our own lives and times.  The full text of Fr Jim’s talk is available to download.  This was followed by the Mass of the Annunciation.  It was while he was celebrating the vigil Mass of the Annunciation that Blessed Oscar was shot by a single assassin in the chapel of the Divine Providence cancer hospital where he lived.  For the benefit of those who were unable to be present, our Mass was streamed live, and a recording is available here.

The Justice and Peace Association (Caritas, Diocese of Salford) would like to warmly thank Fr Chris Gorton and the parishioners of the Good Shepherd parish, Colne for their generous hospitality – and a special thanks to the music group which added so much to our celebration of Mass.
