It’s just a year ago that Mohamad, Fatima and their children flew into Manchester Airport to be greeted by the parishioners of St Mary’s that had come together to create a Community Sponsorship Group to welcome a refugee family to Burnley. One year on and the family are thriving, learning English, making friends and keen to learn and work.
At the First Anniversary Party, held on the 29th June at the Vincent Farrell Centre, friends gathered to celebrate the first year of the resettlement of the family from Syria and enjoy Fatima’s famous cakes and bakes and listen to Mohamad’s speech that thanked everyone for the welcome and friendship offered by the people of Burnley and in particular by the dedicated group of sponsors.
Key to the successful resettlement has been the family themselves who have embraced every opportunity to integrate, learn English and to drive and make friends. Now we look forward to the second year where we hope to hear more about their progress towards independence.
