About this session:

This session will help attendees gain a greater understanding of guide dogs, where they come from, what they need on the journey to adulthood and how they are prepared for life as a service dog.

Run by one of our Caritas volunteer accessibility advocates, Clair, this session will encourage participants to think about the different stages and people involved from breeding a litter of puppies to hopefully ending up with qualified guide dogs.

Clair is a volunteer puppy raiser for Guide Dogs (for the Blind) and is currently raising her sixth puppy, Kayla, who will hopefully be able to join Clair for this session.

The content will be focused on Clair’s experiences as a guide dogs puppy raiser and will include useful awareness tips she has regarding how to respond when you (unexpectedly) encounter service dogs in training.

After today’s session you will know what factors will help or hinder a puppy’s training that you can influence as a member of the public and how you can be an advocate for not only trainee guide dogs and their handler but also qualified guide dogs and their VIP (Visually Impaired/ blind human Partner). You will have also have opportunities to ask questions without judgement.
