Appeal for runners as demand for services soars
We’re urgently looking for runners who might be willing to take on the Great Manchester Run or other challenges this year to raise much-needed funds to support local people in Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
Could you please join our team?
We’ve seen a significant increase in demand for our services as people feel the harsh impact of the cost-of-living crisis and we’re appealing for support from anyone who feels they’re able to take on a challenge in 2024 in aid of our charity.
Patrick O’Dowd, our director, said: “There are many people locally who are experiencing acute crisis and simply aren’t able to afford things that all of us should have access to. Whether that’s a safe, secure place to call home, three meals a day, or simply knowing they’re able to keep their children warm at night, hardworking individuals and families in Greater Manchester and Lancashire are finding themselves in unthinkable situations they never thought would happen.
“Our teams are working hard to support as many people as possible, but the fundraising landscape is also difficult as budget cuts mean many sources of funding are being reduced or simply aren’t available.
“We are working really hard to generate funds and work as efficiently as possible while also continuing to meet the urgent needs of local people. It’s a difficult balancing act, especially as our own costs, such as to heat the buildings that support people experiencing homelessness or food that we provide for local families, have also increased.
“That’s why we’re putting out this appeal for people who might be willing to take on the Great Manchester Run or another challenge – whether physical, mental or both – in aid of Caritas Salford this year.
“We have places available in lots of runs or other activities throughout the year, or if people prefer they can take on their own challenge too. However they choose to support us, we’d be hugely grateful – and most importantly it would help people locally change their lives with dignity. There are so many people needing support right now – every gesture and donation really does make a difference.”
We’ve launched our Every Step campaign which is challenging you to do something that pushes you out of your comfort zone to help raise awareness and funds for Caritas Salford.
As well as the Great Manchester Run, places are available in the Manchester Half Marathon and a range of other runs across the region, from Heaton Park to Aintree, Blackburn to Delamere and beyond. There’s also a range of other activities and events on offer, as well as the option for people to organise their own challenge.
Patrick said: “From baking sales to quiz-athons, spelling challenges to sponsored walks, every step you choose to take can make a massive difference.
“It doesn’t need to take lots of time, but any small change you can make would mean a huge amount. Thank you in advance to anyone who is able to support.”
