St Josephs Penny 2015

We are delighted that your school is taking part in our annual appeal, raising money for children, mums and dads across the Diocese of Salford who need help. Not everyone has the things they need to make a happy home, but Caritas, through the St Joseph's Penny Appeal, reaches out to those vulnerable children and families in our communities. We offer support in lots of different ways - from food parcels to counselling sessions, from Christmas presents to giving young mums and their babies somewhere safe to live; Caritas means something different to everyone we help.

Last year schools in the Diocese of Salford raised nearly £100,000 for the St Joseph's Penny Appeal - that's an awful lot of pennies*! We are so grateful for your support, and love hearing all about the creative ways you collect money - let us know what your fundraising activities are and we'll feature you on our website.

Once again, thank-you for taking part in the St Joseph's Penny collection. Your support is of vital importance in helping Caritas reach out to vulnerable children, mums and dads in our local communities.

In 2014, the St Joseph's Penny will celebrate it's 110th Anniversary

St Joseph's Penny Cathedral Celebration 2014

On Wednesday the 11th of June we gathered in Salford Cathedral with representatives from over thirty schools from across the diocese who had been invited to a Mass of thanksgiving and celebration.

Bishop Terence Brain presided and was joined by Fr Christopher Dawson, Fr Anthony Sudlow and Fr Steven Parkinson. Bishop Brain, who is also the chair of the Caritas charity, spoke warmly during his homily of the wonderful support offered by the young people of Salford Diocese to those in need.

This year's appeal is going very well and had been met with much enthusiasm from schools taking part. 197 schools received penny boxes in March, and to date we have collected donations from 83 schools, raising a total at present of £61,327.36.

On behalf of Terence our Bishop and all of us at Caritas – THANK YOU.

What will you do to take part? We are asking not just schools but parishes and people near and far who hold a special place in their hearts for the St Joseph's Penny to raise money to celebrate this milestone.

How Your Donations Helped

In 2013, your donations helped mums, dads and kids in need in the Diocese of Salford. You enabled us to run Homes for homeless young women and their children as well as a Family Contact Centre where children contact their estranged parent after a divorce or separation.

Not every family has everything they need to make a happy home, and by donating to the St Joseph’s Penny Collection, you help to provide everything from the roof over their heads to expert counselling to overcome tough issues.

You are making a life-changing difference to so many young people. Thank you!

The History of the Collection

The first Collection was held in 1904 and raised £230, 1 shilling and 5p (about £20,000 in today’s money).

In 2013, the Collection raised £110,000 – a true testament to the generosity of Catholic Schools throughout the Diocese of Salford!

From 1904 until 2009, the St Joseph’s Penny Collection was run by the Catholic Children’s Rescue Society (CCRS), and from 2010 to the present, it has been run by Caritas. This is because in 2010, CCRS merged with other diocesan charities to form Caritas Diocese of Salford.

The Collection Today

All the Catholic primary and secondary schools in the Diocese of Salford are invited to join the St. Joseph’s Penny Lenten Collection – and 90% of schools take part. This is an important opportunity for all pupils to help other children and young people whose lives are affected by poverty, disadvantage or insecurity.

Schools can fundraise in whatever way they see fit – whether that be through penny boxes, events, raffles, sponsored activities, etc.
