The Lalley Centre, one of Caritas’s community projects in Collyhurst, Manchester, recently did some filming with the BBC One Show where Edwina Currie spoke to staff and clients.  After Edwina said she “can’t believe people in this country go hungry” on Radio 5 Live, the One Show took up her challenge to show her the modern face of British hunger. Together with FareShare, a food parcel distribution network, the Lalley Centre brought to life how many families are struggling to make ends meet today. The former Conservative MP spoke to Sr. Rita, Centre Coordinator, about the reasons why people are so in need today and how the Centre provides assistance. She also spoke to clients of the Lalley, asking their stories and why the service is so valuable.

It doesn’t seem that Edwina changed her mind about the need of the British public today (she has been making similar comments since the 80s!), but through the exposure from the BBC, people across the UK will understand the plight that some of their fellow countrymen and women are facing.

Caritas has three Community Resource Centres, such as the Lalley Centre, across the Diocese to provide vital assistance to families and individuals. Each is unique, shaped by and for the community it serves. These centres would not be possible without dedicated volunteers who donate their time and skills to help people in their communities get welfare and debt advice, feed their families, and even just have someone to chat to if a bit lonely.
